DC-NABJ is honored to have several women in the media to receive the Esteemed Women of Michigan Award. Among the recipients are our illustrious and industrious President Vickie Thomas and Parliamentarian Georgette C. R. Johnson.

The award was first given out in 2010 when President Vickie and member Felecia Henderson were among the first recipients.

The Gary Burnstein Clinic bestows the honor on ‘women of Michigan who have excelled in their profession, risen above intolerable circumstances, developed the means to help others or have become an inspirational figure for our younger generation.’

A VIP reception and luncheon was held in 2010 and 2011 to recognize these phenomenal women at the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester.

Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame journalist Ted Talbert and the Detroit Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists will sponsor a special Black History Month screening Friday of “An Eagle Should Fly” — Talbert’s historical documentary that tells the exploits of the Tuskegee Airmen, who fought the enemy abroad and racism at home during World War II.

The digitally remastered film, which Talbert produced 27 years ago, includes interviews with local Tuskegee Airmen, including the late Detroit Mayor Coleman A. Young.

The evening is designed to celebrate the Tuskegee Airmen in a year when the successful George Lucas film “Red Tails” has cast a new spotlight on their service, and to honor Talbert, a longtime member of NABJ.

The event also raises funds for the Robert McGruder Scholarship Fund, which DC-NABJ awards each year.

Talbert, a seven-time Emmy Award-winner who has worked as a reporter at WXYZ-TV (Channel 7), WJBK-TV (Channel 2) and WDIV-TV (Channel 4), now does independent film projects. But he can remember, years ago, where the germ of an idea came from for his Tuskegee film.

“I went to Northern High School, and Richard Macon, who was a Tuskegee Airman, was my algebra teacher,” Talbert recalled. “He’d get in front of us — a bunch of kids from the projects and our only knowledge of World War II was what we saw at the Duke Theatre — and he told us he flew fighter planes. We said, ‘Who are you, John Wayne or John Garfield?’ ”

Later, as a reporter who wrote for the Michigan Chronicle, the Detroit Courier and the Free Press, “I discovered the Tuskegee Airmen,” he recalled. “And in researching the article, I saw my math teacher’s name who was shot down. Richard Macon! I wrote this article back in 1977. Nobody was talking about the Tuskegee Airmen back then. I ended up getting Coleman Young and Charlie Diggs and a whole bunch of Detroiters.”

Seven years later, while at Channel 2, he produced “An Eagle Should Fly.”

The title came from the way the pilots were treated. Military brass wouldn’t let them fly.

The screening of Talbert’s film will be at the Fort Shelby DoubleTree Suites, 525 W. Lafayette Blvd. It is one of 30 events that DC-NABJ is hosting this year in celebration of its 30th anniversary.

Tickets for the event are $25 and include the 5:30 p.m. reception, screening and panel discussion following the film. Several Tuskegee Airmen, the veteran pilots who successfully escorted bombers across Italy and Germany during World War II, will attend the screening. Call 313-300-2807 or go to www.detroitnabj.org .

Happy New Year DC-NABJ members and supporters!!

Thank you all for your support in 2011!! As we kick off our 30th anniversary celebration this year, your continued support in 2012 is critical. We should all ask ourselves on a regular basis, “What am I doing to make a difference in building up and moving the chapter forward.”

This month, we launch our ambitious 30-30-30 Campaign. The goal is to host 30 events and raise $30,000 to mark our 30th birthday. As you know, the DC-NABJ won Chapter of the Year at the 2011 NABJ convention in Philadelphia for our hard work in 2010 and my vision is to win it again by successfully completing our 30-30-30 Campaign this year!

I want to acknowledge our 2011 board members, Lloyd Jackson, Oralandar Brand-Williams, Rogers Foster, Alicia Nails and Randye Bullock for their hard work over the past year. We faced some challenges in 2011 but managed to keep the chapter on solid ground and our signature events alive! Our membership continues to grow and our reputation in the community remains strong. I sincerely appreciate your contributions.

Thank you in advance to our 2012-2013 board members, Lloyd Jackson, Oralandar Brand-Williams, Randye Bullock, Alicia Nails and Georgette Johnson…buckle up, it’s going to be a wild and wonderful ride!! We are planning a full year of events from congressional debates and a roast to mixers and a picnic!! Another big event in the works is a Detroit Chapter birthday party at the NABJ convention in New Orleans!

Thank you also to all of our committee chairs and co-chairs for their work in 2011. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be looking at committee assignments for the New Year. If you have an interest in a particular committee, please contact me as soon as possible. The committees and duties for each are listed on our web site at www.detroitnabj.org.

You’ll also find the membership application on the web site. Dues should be paid this month, excluding those who paid in the late quarter of 2011. Dues can also be paid at our January 19, 2012 meeting at WJR-News/Talk 760, located on the 8th floor of the Fisher Building. Mix and mingle starts at 6 p.m. Let’s start the New Year off right and kick off our 30th anniversary with a strong showing at the meeting!! I’ll see you there and all the best to you and yours in 2012!
