About Detroit NABJ
The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is an organization of nearly 4,000 journalists, students and media-related professionals that advocates for diversity in newsrooms and in news content. We are committed to providing quality programs and services for black journalists worldwide. The Detroit chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, DC-NABJ, is the local affiliate of NABJ and upholds the same principles.
The Detroit chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (Detroit NABJ) was founded in December 1982 by Black journalists working at print, TV, and radio news outlets in the city.
As an affiliate chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), the mission of Detroit NABJ for 40 years has been to serve as an advocacy organization promoting and urging newsrooms in Metro Detroit to take proactive measures to hire, train, promote and retain Black journalists throughout their newsrooms.
Through year-round programming, the chapter provides its members the tools they need to perform in their jobs, and helps them enhance their networking skills within the industry on the local and national level.
For emerging journalists, the Detroit NABJ mentoring program offers an opportunity to benefit from the experience and counsel of Black journalists in Metro Detroit.
As a 501c3, Detroit NABJ raises funds for its scholarship program that aids area college students studying journalism. And for more than two decades, proceeds from the chapter’s Show the Love annual Thanksgiving fundraiser has benefited area Black journalists with financial assistance after a job loss, severe illness or other hardships.
